Tech giants profit off your data every day, but what if you could actually earn money from the data you create? In this article, we’ll explore how to sell your data, what data brokers are best, and some challenges you’ll face along the way.

How Does Selling My Data Work?

Your data is valuable. To marketers, businesses, and researchers. There are platforms known as data brokers, which act as marketplaces where you can exchange your data for cash, gift cards, and other rewards.

Selling your data can be as simple as installing an app on your phone or computer. These applications collect anonymous information about you and sell it to companies, In exchange, you earn rewards like cash, crypto, or gift cards.

The best part is you don’t need to do anything. Simply install the app and live your life. Selling your data is truly one of the easiest forms of passive income, but it does have its limits.

How Much Is My Data Worth?

Data such as browsing habits, location, and shopping history aren’t worth a whole lot. Most of the time, your info is worth less than a dollar. But that doesn’t mean you can earn a meaningful side income by continuously sharing this data.

The trick is to install multiple apps and sell to various brokers at once. You can stack your rewards and start earning a nice little side income without putting in any extra work. Without going overboard, you can earn between $20-$150 a month simply by selling your data.

As an experiment, I booted up a few old phones and a spare laptop and created a spreadsheet of the best data brokers I could find. After jumping through a ton of hoops, in a month’s time I was able to earn $445 for my data. Pretty dang good!

I’ll share some of the apps I used below. But first, a word of caution.

Selling Your Data: A Word Of Warning

To be clear, you are giving another company a look into your life. While each company can collect something different, many collect metrics such as:

• Browsing habits
• Shopping habits
• Location
• Data usage
• Internet usage
• App usage
• Fitness (steps, etc)

If you’re not comfortable with this, selling your data might not be the best side hustle for you. While companies say your data is anonymized, you can never be 100% certain, so if you’re very privacy conscious, maybe don’t sell your data.

Another thing you notice is a strain on your battery life. Some of these apps use your phone’s CPU, GPU, and GPS while you’re phone isn’t in use. Of course, you’re paid for this, but if you notice your battery draining faster than normal, that’s why.

Lastly, iPhone users don’t have as many opportunities available to them. This is because Apple locks down the apps you can install, and make it difficult for data brokers to, well, collect data. A great thing for your privacy, but not if you’re trying to capitalize on it.

By far, the most challenging part of this process is signing up and installing all of the apps. If you’re looking to install multiple apps, consider keeping a spreadsheet to track all of your logins.

During installation, you might have to manually give apps specific permissions to your phone. This does require a little technical know-how, but nothing a quick Google search can’t fix.

3. Profit

It’s really that simple, as you generate data, you’ll earn points which can be converted into rewards such as gift cards and cash. Almost all apps listed in the spreadsheet have a Paypal option for payout, which is nice.

I recommend installing only a few apps at once, and monitoring how it impacts your device. This way, if you notice your phone slowing down or draining the battery too much, you can uninstall it and try another.

If you have some old phones lying around, consider using those to generate data as well. Apps like Honeygain pay you more for additional devices. Plug in your spare phone, and start streaming some music or a video to generate data. The more data you generate, the higher your payout.
